The opportunity of being surrounded by incredible people has happened many
times at Caffe Trieste and this day was yet another memory I hold dear. In 2003 I was able to spend
an afternoon with Joe Rosenthal and had a blast. I was very pregnant and a heatwave had been in town
a few times that summer. Joe was enjoying his wine while sharing about his times in Telegraph Hill
along Grant and Broadway, South of Market and the Downtown districts in San Francisco. He pointed to
a window across the street from our table and talked about how he would nap during the day to revive
for the nights in The City. He tossed his voice over to a friend and asked the guys's name whose
apartment they would crash at--no one could remember. He told me that he has many memories in this
city and he has a whole life other than the photograph he is famous for: Iwo Jima Flag-Raising. He
feared he would only be known for his one photograph for there was so much about him that could also
be remembered. He threw names of people and places that were from a time past and he certainly holds
those times dear. If he could relive them he would in a heartbeat. The photographs below are a
cherished memory to all of us that enjoyed an afternoon with Joe Rosenthal. Photographs with Joe:
Gerard, Joe and Chuck are enjoying a laugh. Kim enjoys wine with Joe. I kiss his sweet head--he truly
is sweet and he is a kick in the pants. Then the funny sequence shot is Rich, Gerard, Joe and Chuck.
Gerard did not have a wine glass and I pregnant did not have one to toss his way, so Gerard grabs
Joe's wine glass to cheer to the camera. Well, this was not okay with Joe. As you can see through the
photographs Joe is attempting to pull his wine glass back into his possession, but Gerard clueless to
this continues to hold the glass tight and cheer to the camera. In the last photograph Joe is
determined to get his glass back with both hands pulling it from Gerard's hand. What a fabulous
afternoon and what a great man to share a bit of his personal life with me. Had we have met one more
time I would have had more to share here, but that time will never happen. Joe may you be remembered
for your life in San Francisco and you will be missed this weekend at the 50th Caffe Trieste
celebration. Truly, Zabrina. 21 August 2006. Photography by Zabrina Tipton.
